750 STUDENT AUTHORS CREATED AND COUNTING...

Welcome to Book-in-a-Day, an inspiring literacy program, where middle and high school students learn how to write well-crafted poetry, and how to publish a book—IN ONE DAY. This program is built on the belief that students become avid readers and engaged writers when they assume complete responsibility for becoming authors. At the conclusion of the program, a book launch is held where students read their poems and autograph copies. Since 2006, we've created over 800 students authors!

Book-in-a-Day has had an eventful year. A year of firsts, if you will. We hired

our first intern: the amazing and recently-graduated Janice Sapigao from the University of California-San Diego; We brought the program to a group of deaf students at Gallaudet in DC, in partnership with the NEA's The Big Read; Herndon Middle School in Virginia, was the first middle school in the country to complete the program. The 7th & 8th grade students published a brilliant book called Winter Coat; and we established the BID Fellows Program, which will take place eight writer/educators to Italy next summer. Look for more of the Write Thing Next Year! Happy Holidays! —Kwame Alexander, Founding Director
