Success Story: Herndon Middle School

Excerpt from Herndon Middle School's "Winter Coat"

Now winter nights enlarge.
The number of their hours,
And clouds their storms discharge
Upon the airy towers.
—Thomas Campion

Winter Coat. It is the work of some of Herndon Middle School's most talented minds. We have found the courage to reach inside ourselves to promote ideas, share our identities, and believe in ourselves. We have reached and strived to complete a book that will inspire and encourage readers.

Sometimes being brutally honest to express our feelings, and share our perspectives on life. We decided on the title Winter Coat, because we feel that poems wrap around your mind, the same way winter coats wrap around your body and keep you warm. Poems envelope you and make you feel different, if only for a few seconds. We have peeled off layer after layer of assumption to reach deep within our souls, writing about all things important to us, from Nature to originalities and nationalities, to theatre and sports, perspective to love. No matter the subject, we have written about things that affect us, with metaphors like crimson rose for love and heartbeat for nature. We have shed the supposed image that every one of our age and generation are only tech savvy; we have shown that we posses the ability to produce deeper thought than some adults.

We have put together a collection of poems that reflect our perspectives on love, life, emotions, and more, using our interpretations of the past, and our hopes for the future to shape our writing. Each of us has our own opinionated point of view in which we would like to immerse you. So take a moment, and be enlightened with 21 middle school students.
